Effectiveness of SDF on Caries Arrest in Severe-ECC

Recorded On: 05/26/2023

Speakers:  Amr M. Moursi, D.D.S., PhD & Margherita Fontana, DDS, PhD

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) has become a popular treatment modality for minimally-invasive caries management in pediatric patients. This presentation will review preliminary results of the NIH-sponsored, phase III randomized clinical trial on the effectiveness of SDF to arrest cavitated lesions in pre-school children with severe Early Childhood Caries. Although in the United States SDF is currently used “off-label” for caries arrest, the results of this study could provide important data for a caries arrest drug claim to the U.S. FDA. Attendees will learn how the trial was designed and conducted, and the impact the initial findings may have on clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:
  • Upon completion, participants will understand the design of this trial and strategies to minimize risk of bias
  • Upon completion participants will understand the significance of the preliminary findings
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to compare and contrast the interim results of this trial with other data in the literature
